A SPIRIT has left staff at a South Lakeland pub shaken and a little stirred.

Ghostly goings-on at the General Burgoyne in Great Urswick have continued with the sighting of a faceless girl spectre.

The apparition appeared to bar manager James Craystone while he was waiting for a taxi after his shift.

He spotted the spook, wearing a white night gown, walking straight through the front door of the pub,

Mr Craystone was so frightened that he jumped over the wall he was sitting on and ran to the other end of the village.

Brian Hazlehurst, who became owner of the General Burgoyne five months ago, said: "We have had a few weird things happen since we have been here."

He took to social media to see if he could find anybody who knew about the unearthly girl, receiving some interesting responses.

"People love it round here. Everybody starts talking about it. It's really good," said Mr Hazelhurst. "Apparently there's a picture of this white girl so we are trying to get hold of that."

The social media appeal has revealed some speculation as to who the faceless girl actually is.

Some have said the ghost is called Livvy; a girl who drowned in Urswick Tarn many years ago.

Others believe her presence may be linked to other ghostly goings-on at the General Burgoyne, including a mysterious cupboard that opens on its own.

Mr Hazlehurst said: "There's a cupboard in the pub that has got a skull in it that has been there for a long, long time.

"If you touch it, it's supposed to bring bad luck.

"It has been seen open a few times and it is not something that could be done by a draught."

Despite its spooky reputation, people have not been put off from visiting the pub.

Mr Hazlehurst's sons, Max and Frazier, have named the skull Jimmy, and even talk to it.

The ghost stories have also attracted the attention of a number of local paranormal investigators, however Mr Hazlehurst has decided not to use them.

He said: "I'm quite on edge with it. I like to know what's when and where but with this I'd rather not know.

"The ghosts are not causing us any problems."
