CLIMBING enthusiasts from all over the UK came to Kendal to take part in the 2016 edition of the Marmot Masters Bouldering Competition.

Ninety competitors took part across the eight categories that made up the event's final at the Lakeland Climbing Centre on Friday.

Local talent was on show, with Kitty Morrison, of Newby, near Ingleton, winning the Elite Female category.

Simon Bennett, head route setter and event organiser, said: "The main point to come out of the event was that it has grown since last year.

"A major talking point was was the junior categories overall.

"It's really encouraging for the future of the competition and the sport."

Contributing to the popularity of the event was the involvement of Lakes-based professional climber Emma Twyford, who set routes for the competitors.

Mr Bennett said: "The fact that she got to set some of the routes pulled customers in because she is a top route setter."

As well as watching the competition, supporters and competitors were treated to a live DJ, as well as physio sessions provided by the University of Cumbria.

Customers were given the opportunity to try out a number of different bouldering routes, with problems of varying difficulty for them to tackle.

The event was sponsored by Marmot Clothing and Equipment, which has a store based in Ambleside.

Marmot provided the winners with prizes, including rucksacks, clothing and outdoor equipment.

Mr Bennett said: "The success of the event reflects the popularity of bouldering as a sport in the area.

"It is quick and easy to get into; you can do it almost immediately with instant success.

"It is far more accessible than rope climbing."
