A KENDAL taxi driver has started an e-petition calling for a northern relief road for the town.
Nigel Thompson has said a link road between the A6 and the A591 would “do wonders for both Kendal and for any future M6 closures in the area.”
On the petition, which has attracted more than 200 signatures so far, he states: “In 2015 motorway closures saw M6 traffic come through the town around 15 times.”
Mr Thompson told the Gazette: “One of our operators took three hours to get in from Shap several weeks ago when there was an accident on the motorway.
“All that traffic coming through Kendal puts more weight on the bridges which are already weakened.
“At the moment the industrial estate is at the wrong end of town.”
Mr Thompson has joined a number of voices calling for the northern relief road scheme to be resurrected in recent weeks, including Kendal Town Council, South Lakeland District Council and the Kendal branch of the Federation of Small Businesses.
