CLOSE to 3,000 hardy participants took on a military-inspired obstacle course in Eden at the weekend.

The Born Survivor event at Lowther Castle is the brainchild of an ex-Royal Marines’ Commando and Falkland’s veteran.

Saturday's event attracted 2,700 people and featured specially designed and military-inspired obstacles on a 10km course built within the confines of Lowther Estate.

Kevin Bedford, event director, said: “It was another incredible day for our participants at Lowther Castle. This was our sixth event so far and the fourth time returning to the beautiful Lowther Estate, where our reputation as one of the UK’s leading obstacle events helped draw people from across Cumbria, as well as those from outside the county who accounted for around half of our participants.”

The hilly, off-road, course comprised 33 physically demanding obstacles and attracted a wide range of ages and abilities.

After a safety briefing and warm up delivered by a team of professional army PT’s, waves of up to 300 people were set off throughout the day from the Born Survivor event village.

Here, participants and spectators were able to enjoy changing facilities, bag storage, as well as festival style catering, music, shops and attractions including a children’s obstacle course.

Mr Bedford added: “This was definitely our toughest course yet and the feedback we’ve received since has confirmed this. We know people come from far and wide to Born Survivor for a challenging, but enjoyable and safe day out and that’s what we endeavour to deliver consistently.

"When you combine our quality event delivery with such a stunning Lake District venue, it’s not difficult to see why people want to take part.”

Born Survivor’s sponsors and partners were in attendance at Lowther Castle and included Sub Sports, Grenade Nutrition, Total Fitness, The Cystic Fibrosis Trust, The Soldiers’ Charity and Unique Kidz.

Safety, radio and paramedic cover was provided by Jigsaw and Preston based Bowland Communications, with obstacle marshals provided by Lancaster’s FGH Security team.
