A couple of weeks ago I wrote about car parking charges and how, on Easter Sunday, my mother and I had gone to Ullswater to show our support and had parked at Aira Force car park where people were being charged £5 for a two-hour stay (Letters, April 7, 'Outrage over parking price').

Yesterday, I went back to Ullswater but this time parked in the car park in the centre of Glenridding. On the ticket machines were notices saying that to encourage people to visit the village, prices were either £2 for two hours or £4 for the day. Now this is more like it!

So for £4 for a day's parking, I spent the day in Glenridding, went on a round the lake ride in one of the steam boats which lasted two hours, then had a bite to eat in one of the cafes.

Being in Glenridding it is still obvious to see the devastation that was left by the floods and the on-going work to try to get the village back on its feet.

This is the right way to encourage people to visit not only places that were affected by the floods but the whole of the Lakes, especially areas like Kendal, Bowness etc.

Come on the 'Powers that Be', whoever you are, this is the way to go! People will visit and spend their money if they are not having to worry about car parking prices and be constantly clock watching as to when their tickets will run out.
