Peter Jewell has misunderstood the problems facing Staveley (Letters. April 21, 'Village was a miserable spot').

The closed bridge causing problems for the village is not Sprint Bridge (on the road from the A6 to Burneside) but the Eagle and Child bridge in Staveley. The harm being done to the businesses is by the loss of passing trade which for some of the Main Street shops amounted to 25 per cent of their turnover.

Rather than moaning, as he writes, they have been very proactive putting up signs to make clear that Staveley is open for business.

But this will not help with commuters along the A591 who want call in to buy a newspaper, food for work etc and get away as quickly as they can.

The bleak picture of the 1970s in his memory is nothing like the vibrant community and business centre that we have today.

But then my memories of Staveley in the 1970s are of a lively village, whose only downside was the streams of traffic along the A591 which ran through heart of the village.

Clearly, as with his confusion over the bridge, Dr Jewell was thinking of a different Staveley.
