A JUBILEE project by Kendal Civic Society to restore the Old Police Yard between Market Place and Finkle Street was officially unveiled on Saturday.

The yard is named after the police station that once stood on the corner. Beside it, stretching along Finkle Street, was Kendal's first fire station, designed by the town's famous architect, Francis Webster.

Kendal Civic Society president Susan Bagot performed the opening ceremony and those who attended admired a new mural created by artist Claire Cooper.

Society secretary Patricia Hovey said the restoration had been a long, slow process, with many difficulties and delays along the way.

"It took much longer than we first envisaged," she said. "But now that the project is completed, we can see that it was well worth it and instead of a dirty alleyway best avoided, we have a bright inviting link between the Market Place and Finkle Street.

"It is a yard full of history well illustrated on the nural, and described on the two new plaques at each end of the yard."
