A RARE porcelain Chinese vase discovered at a valuation day in Kendal has sold at auction for well over its asking price.

The vase went under the hammer at a Bonhams Fine Chinese Art sale in London today and made £110,500 from a pre-sale estimate of £50,000 to £80,000.

The Gazette reported last month that the vase, thought to have graced a Chinese imperial palace over two centuries ago, was only taken to the valuation day at the Stonecross Manor as an afterthought.

A retired council worker from Cumbria decided at the last minute to add the vase to her silver spoons and plated ‘ bits and pieces’.

A spokesman for Bonhams said that the vase was bought by a Chinese buyer in the room.
