A DEVELOPER has gone public with outline plans to build houses on two industrial sites in Kendal.

If planning permission is granted the housing will be built on the site of the Electricity North West (ENW) depots off Parkside Road.

DPP Planning, who will be making the two outline planning applications on behalf of ENW, held a public consultation event at K Village last Thursday.

The proposed development will be made up of Parkside North and Parkside South, with DPP suggesting six houses for the south and between 30 and 35 for the north site.

John Francis, the director of DPP, said that all of the existing uses and operations from the north site will either be relocated to the south or to other sites in Kendal.

"All existing jobs are going to be protected," he said. "The intention is to make an investment which is secured through the sale of the depots."

Jennifer Casey, who lives in Kendal, believes that the development looks like it will be 'an addition to the area'.

"It will get rid of the site that isn't used and provide some sensible housing for people near to the town," she said. "From what I've seen the impact won't be untoward in any way."

A spokesperson for ENW said: "As part of our ongoing drive to improve office and industrial facilities for our employees we are seeking to upgrade our depot at Parkside Road in Kendal.

"The site was first home to Kendal Corporation Electricity in 1902 and Electricity North West has operated from the site for almost ten years. As part of the redevelopment, we will be releasing land for potential residential development on the north side of Parkside Road."

Some residents expressed concerns about the traffic that would come with a new development; however, Mr Francis has said that there would be a decrease in traffic in comparison to the current industrial operation.

Outline planning applications will be lodged with South Lakeland District Council later this month or in June.
