PUPILS at a north Lancashire primary school were sent back in time to the Roman age thanks to the enthusiasm of a former parent.

Mark Petts brought the Roman Empire to life for youngsters at Wilson's Endowed CE School at Over Kellet School when he visited in full centurion costume.

He shared his love of all things Roman; answering the children's many questions; letting them try on parts of the replica uniform as well as handling Roman artefacts.

A week later the whole school visited Hadrian's Wall, the Roman Army Museum, Brampton, and the Vindolanda Roman Fort, Hexham.

Archaeologists undertaking a dig showed their finds to the children and Aaliyah Atkinson, aged seven, was thrilled to be only third person to hold a piece of Samian ware that only been excavated minutes before.

Head teacher Jo Williams said: "It is so magical to bring history to life through these hands on experiences. The Vindolanda archaeologists were wonderful with the children and brought an added dimension to our visit. The children enjoyed Mark Petts visiting the school, he brought the past to our door."
