THE CORONER at an inquest into the death of seven people, following an outbreak of Legionnaires Disease, has expressed his dismay at the 'shambles'within Barrow Borough Council.
Furness coroner Ian Smith recorded a narrative verdict, saying five victims had died as a direct result of contracting Legionnaire's disease. One other person died from natural causes, contributed to by the disease, and another from natural causes, the treatment of which was compromised in part by Legionnaire's disease.
He said the law prevented him from giving a verdict of unlawful killing, which the families of the deceased had requested.
He said he believed that the council should apologise personally to the families for their suffering.
