KENDAL College students return to the Brewery stage on Wednesday (June 15) with a must-see show based on a true story.

Running at the Kendal arts centre until Saturday, June 18 (7.30pm with a 2pm matinee on the Saturday), Made in Dagenham - the Musical is based on the original story and hit movie, and KC's assistant head of school (creative arts) Hilary Pezet says "it’s a really funny, cheeky and very energetic piece.

"We're spending a lot of time finding substitute swear words as the original was very 1960s humour which is quite ‘fruity,’ to say the least," adds Hilary who directs the piece.

"We have a great cast as always and some future stars in the making. Our lead actress, Charlotte Craig, playing Rita O’Grady has just been accepted at Bird, one of the top training schools for the West End, and the lead boy, Cameron Barlow has just won the NODA award for the best performer in a musical in the north west for his leading role in Les Miserable at Barrow."

No doubt Made in Dagenham will be another five star production from Hilary and her sensational young performers; the show features a cast of 40 talented students with a fantastic live band made up of former and current music students and professional players led by musical director Alex Phillips.

Clare Eccles has coached the singers, Kerry Howard choreographed the complex dances, and Mike Denny is leading the technical theatre students who are creating the set and running the lighting and sound at the Brewery.

Made in Dagenham is set in Essex in 1968 and shows how ordinary people can do extraordinary things when they stand together.

Like millions of working women every morning Rita O' Grady is just trying to get her husband out of bed, get the kids off to school and get to work at the factory on time. However, her life is about to change forever when it’s announced that the girls in the stitching room of Ford’s Dagenham car plant will have their pay grade dropped to ‘unskilled.’

Rita leads her friends in a battle against the might of Ford and the corruption of the union supposed to protect them. As the girls’ inspiring journey gets bigger than anyone could have imagined, the pressure is too much for some, but can Rita keep up the fight and the happy home she’s worked so hard for?

Touching and timeless, the show is an uplifting musical comedy about friendship, love and the importance of fighting for what is right.
