TWO Cumbrian roads have been named among the quietest highways in Britain.

The A5091 in the Lake District has been named the fourth quietest road while the A686 running from Penrith to Haydon Bridge in Northumberland has been named by Avis Car Rental UK as the fifth quietest.

The A5091 is a short 5.2-mile road which starts on the shores of Ullswater and reaches the A66 a couple of miles west of Penruddock.

Named as ‘One of the Greatest Drives in Britain’ by the AA last year, the A686 runs from Penrith through Alston (across the 'roof' of England) and down onto the A69 just after Haydon Bridge and about five miles before Hexham.

Third quietest was the A3079 in Devon; second was the A481 in Powys, Wales, while the A897, a single track road in the Scottish Highlands, was named quietest road in Britain.

The seven quietest roads were identified using official data from the Department for Transport.
