A GROUP of singers from Lancashire are inviting an audience on a trip down musical memory lane on July 16.

The Morecambe Bay Singers are gearing up for their annual summer concert at Morecame Parish Church and are fine-tuning their voices ahead of a travel-themed concert celebrating the Bay Gateway M6 link road. Set to make a huge difference to people living in or travelling to the area, the new road aims to reduce congestion in and around Morecambe and Lancaster.

Taking place at 7.30pm, the celebratory concert will feature songs including ‘The Long and Winding Road’, ‘Take Me Home Country Roads’ and ‘Bless the Broken Road’. Not only will the show celebrate the construction of the link road, it’ll be a poignant occasion in general, being the last concert for the choir’s existing musical director, Stephen Boyd. The travel-themed show has some significance for the father of two, who is leaving the choir due to travel commitments.

Stephen has travelled to Morecambe from Blackpool every Wednesday night for rehearsals for the last 9 years. But when his wife, Hannah, a curate, accepted her first parish last month, it meant there would be even more travelling.

He said: “I am a teacher with a small growing family and Hannah’s new parish is another twenty minutes further away.

"We’ve moved house to be closer for her work and coming over regularly and trying to fit everything is really hard.

"I’ll be hanging up my conducting baton to be closer to home, so it seems poignant that my last concert is all about travel!"

Auditions have taken place for a new Musical Director for the Morecambe Bay Singers. Fans of the choir are assured that it will continue under the new leadership of Laura Pointer, with the support of existing organist and accompanist, David Tattersall.

Tickets to the show are £7 on the door on the night.
