YOUNG at heart South Lakeland residents took part in a specially designed 'O'lympics.

The event, held at Kendal Leisure Centre, was aimed at those over 50 and featured everything from dominoes to table tennis.

With ages ranging from 60 to 92, the day provided those who are a little older with an opportunity to get active and spend time with others.

Hannah Paling, who works at Ulverston Leisure Centre as an active communities co-ordinator, said that it was great to see so many people getting involved.

"There was a mixture of abilities," she said. "It's good for older people to be doing something active and there's a social side to it as well."

This year, the annual event attracted around 40 people, with almost everybody heading home with an 'Olympic' medal.

"Everyone seems to like it," Hannah said. "A lot of them said they had a really good day. It's a free event and it's a chance to do something different."

Age UK South Lakeland were also involved in the activities, with five volunteers attending to help support attendees.

Ruth Taylor, the volunteer support officer at Age UK South Lakeland, said that events like these were incredibly important for both physical and mental health.

"I am sure there is a link between not seeing other people and mental health," she said. "Transport is an issue in more rural areas, which is why community transport is really important.
