The collection of books and papers organised in Kendal by Mr Bell, the postmaster, resulted in two and a half tons of reading matter being got together and despatched by the post office staff to various military hospitals. More than 10,000 items were packed in 68 bags.

A packed public meeting in Arnside village school on Monday disclosed a fierce difference of opinion in whether a clubhouse should be built on the foreshore for the local Sailing Club and ended dramatically with the resignation from the parish council of its chairman, Mr Ernest Beeston.

Kendal's Town Crier found his title counted for nothing when he came back from official duties to find a parking ticket on his car. Mr George Duxbury received the £25 excess notice after his wife parked their car at the council-owned Entry Lane car park in Kendal. Mr Duxbury had been opening the annual Medieval Market.
