PENRITH and The Border MP Rory Stewart has a new job in Prime Minister Theresa May's Government.

Following last week's Cabinet reshuffle, the new PM announced further changes including Mr Stewart's move to the Department for International Development as a minister of state.

The former tutor to Princes William and Harry was previously at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, where since December's storms he has been working as floods minister.

Mr Stewart, 43, has considerable international experience. Before becoming an MP in 2010, he served with the Diplomatic Service in Jakarta, Montenegro and Iraq. He famously walked for 21 months across Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and Nepal, staying in 500 village houses; and he chaired the Turquoise Mountain Foundation, based in Kabul, which worked to restore part of the old city, establish a clinic, primary school and arts institute, and bring Afghan crafts to international markets.

His work in Iraq earned him an OBE, and in 2014 he was elected chair of the Defence Select Committee.

Mr Stewart will work under the new Secretary of State for International Development, Priti Patel. On social media website Twitter, he 'retweeted' her message saying she was "very pleased" to welcome the "talented new ministerial team".
