WELLIES were worn by children at Witherslack's Dean Barwick School as pupils and staff threw a surprise party for retiring head teacher Linda Graves.

According to the children, Mrs Graves has a liking for the footwear and they had chosen to wear the boots in her honour.

Students and colleagues also surprised Mrs Graves by putting on performances for her. They had choreographed a dance to her favourite songs, as well as singing songs about cheese and shoes, as she loves both.

Mrs Graves joined Dean Barwick School as head teacher 11 years ago.

“This was the job that I wanted," she said. "I wanted a school with a big heart and that’s what I got."

“This is not just a job, it has been my life, full of family and friends. There is no place like it.”

Teacher Paul MacFarlane said: “This is an extremely emotional day. Linda and I started here together 11 years ago."

It was not a goodbye forever though as Mrs Graves plans to return as a school volunteer.

“This is incredibly overwhelming," said Mrs Graves. "Thank you doesn’t even cover it. The school community’s support and friendship has meant everything to me over the years.”
