A LAKE District fell walker has created a unique model of one of the area's most famous landmarks.

Ian Robinson is the man behind a new 3D model of Scafell Pike.

"I'd seen small models of the Alps from the late 19th century which were brass, from memory," he said. "I thought would it be possible to recreate that for the Lake District."

Ian worked with Lancaster engineering students and a Lancaster sculptor, Alan Ward, so make sure that the model was accurate and detailed.

Having worked in tourist information, the holiday cottage industry and youth hostels in the Lake District for nearly 20 years, Ian knows the Lake District well and thought that models of popular fells would be appealing to both locals walkers and tourists as a small souvenir.

The model itself was 3D printed and the detail of the mountain was added using dental tools - it was then finished with bronze.

Alan Ward, the sculptor who worked on the project with Ian, said that it was a 'unique' project to work on.

"It was quite exciting to be asked," he said, talking about working with 3D printing. "But the 3D printing was not perfect and it needed work - although I'm sure that will get better in time. The potential for 3D printing is huge."
