SOME of the finest show animals in the county were standing proud and preened at the North Lonsdale Agricultural Show yesterday.

Hundreds descended on Urswick yesterday for the annual animal spectacular which enjoyed significant growth on last year.

The show saw an increase in the number of animals entered across classes with a particularly good showing in the sheep categories.

Show chairman Stephen Benson credited the growth in sheep entries to the positive turn out last year, explaining that the show had built ‘on its good reputation’.

“The sheep are up at least a third on last year,” he said. “And this is because we had such a good entry last year.

“We have a reputation that has spread far and wide; the entries are not just local.”

Attendees at the show had high praise for the event and the way it has grown over the past few years.

Helen Wren, who was attending the show to judge the children’s classes with her husband Jonathon, said: “It’s absolutely brilliant this year. The weather is wonderful and the fields are better than before. It’s always a great day out here.

“There have been lots of entries into the children’s classes too, it’s going to be really hard to choose between them all.”

Her husband added: “Everything seems to be a lot bigger this year, there’s a lot more to do as well, it’s lovely.”

Top prize for the cattle went to Tom Stables, of Urswick, whose Holstein dairy cow, Bolton Manor Damion Sadie, won supreme cattle champion.

Mr Stables believed his cow had won because of its ‘size, power, and dairyness’.

He said: “We are really chuffed, this is the fifth year we’ve brought milkers to shows and the first time we have won supreme, so we’re really happy.”

The champion animal in the sheep classes went to James Airey, who also won the champion pure down/Suffolk category.

Mr and Mrs Hubblethwaite won poultry best in show with their German Langshan cockerel which also won best variety bred male.

The champion beef animal ¬ a Limousin bull – belonged to Thor Atkinson who also won champion opposite sex to the supreme winner.

Herdsman Alan Platt said: “We’re really pleased to win with this home-bred bull. This is the first time this bull has been out to a showing.

“Every class we have been in this year, we’ve been in the top three. In one of them, we were first, second and third.”

There were concerns earlier in the day when the show suffered a delayed start due to a collision on the A590 close to Swarthmoor .

Mr Benson said: “We apologised for the late start because of the issues on the road but there’s nothing we could do about that.

“It soon settled down and we got a good crowd, we had people coming from all over.”

Show secretary Margaret Coward added: “The show has been a success this year, we’ve had a lot of compliments from people.”

Mrs Coward has been secretary for the last 10 years and will be retiring this year. “I wish the new secretary all the best,” she said.

The North Lonsdale Show has a history of more than 130 years. This year is its fourth at its new home in Urswick.
