THE band credited with releasing the first UK punk single are to play at Carlisle's this summer.

The Damned's seminal 1976 debut single 'New Rose' heralded a wave of punk releases that would change the face of popular music forever.

As well as being the first UK-based punk band to release a single, The Damned went on to release the UK's first punk LP - 1977's 'Damned Damned Damned' - and the first to tour in America.

They are set to bring their influential music to The Brickyard on August 5.

The band's lineup featured Dave Vanian on vocals, Captain Sensible on bass, Brian James on guitar and drummer Rat Scabies.

Still fronted by the iconic Dave Vanian and Captain Sensible, The Damned released their most recent album 'So, Who's Paranoid?' in 2008.

Touring regularly, the band have released ten albums to date and played a fortieth anniversary show at The Royal Albert Hall in London in May this year.
