PARAGLIDERS reached for the skies to raise £3,500 for local good causes.

Local pilot Peter Cunningham, whose son Oli has dystonic quad cerebral palsy, received a £500 cheque on behalf of Cumbria Cerebral Palsy.

Peter was among more than 70 paragliders who attended Cumbria Soaring Club's 26th Lakes Charity Classic event, held at Grasmere Sports Ground for the first time this year.

Describing the donation as "very unexpected but very appreciated", he said: "Cerebral Palsy Cumbria have supported us and other families loads over the years."

Three thousand pounds has also been shared between the North West Air Ambulance, Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team, Cumbria Community Foundation's flood recovery appeal, Grasmere Reading Rooms, Grasmere Red Squirrel Group, the RNLI and other charities.

Cumbria Soaring Club's Brian Doub thanked Grasmere villagers and the sports ground's management for making the fun competition possible in the heart of the Lake District.
