TWO major retail names have created more than 20 new jobs in South Lakeland.

In Windermere, a new Sainsbury's local store has opened its doors, whereas in Ulverston four new roles have been created following the £650,000 transformation of the town's Co-op.

The Main Road Sainsbury's store was opened by Langdale Mountain Rescue team members, Roger Pickup and Robert Collyer and Sainsbury's store manager David Catterall.

Mr Catterall, said: "As the new store manager of the Windermere Main Road Local, I am extremely proud to be opening our new store today. Colleagues and I have been looking forward to welcoming our new customers and showcasing the great range of products we have on offer."

The shop, which was previously a My Local store, has created 17 new jobs in the local community.

Meanwhile, the Market Street Co-op in Ulverston will officially open on July 29. The re-opening brings with it four new jobs and the store has been revitalised with a focus on fresh, healthy foods and essentials.

Joanne Rockley, manager of the store said: "We are thrilled to have made such a significant investment in Ulverston, and delighted that we have a fantastic new food store with which to serve the community – it is an exciting time for the whole team."

The shop will be one of the first stores to feature the Co-op's new blue clover-leaf branding and it is also looking to highlight its community pioneer roles.

Annette Partridge, the community pioneer for the branch, will work to foster involvement in community activities, helping to understand and develop solutions to meet community needs, including support for the British Red Cross.

"The Co-op is a community retailer, and we are committed to playing an active role in local life, embracing the area’s community spirit," Joanne said. "As well as raising money for local charities, we will also be supporting the Co-op’s national partnership with British Red Cross to confront loneliness.

"The store will be a hub for the local community, and customers will be able to find out what is going on locally, and learn about how the Co-op can benefit local groups."
