A MAJOR fashion retailer has opened up shop in Lancaster.

Primark opened its doors yesterday (August 24) in Lancaster's Marketgate Shopping Centre.

The store, which has employed 169 members of staff, was officially opened by the Mayor of Lancaster, councillor Robert Redfern.

Councillor Robert Redfern said: "I am delighted and honoured to officially open the new Primark store in Lancaster. The opening of this new store sees 169 new jobs created for our district.

"It is a fantastic addition for shoppers and visitors to our city as well as a welcome economic boost for the district."

A Primark spokesperson added: "We are delighted to open a new store in the Marketgate Shopping Centre. This is an important opening for Primark and we look forward to expanding our footprint and bringing the Primark brand to more customers."
