I wondered if readers might be interested in this photograph of five North brothers who all served in the 1914 -1918 War and miraculously all returned safely.
Six brothers had served in the South African War, but one was killed. Not surprisingly, they were known as the Fighting Norths!
Sadly the following generation was not so fortunate. The eldest son of General North died of wounds sustained in the first world war (John Brabyn North 1896-1921) and his second son (Major Edward Tempest Tunstall North 1900-1941) died in Durban, while returning on a troop ship from North Africa, again as a result of wounds.
The family originated in Docker, Lancashire in 1400 and Newton, Whittington, near Carnforth and still remain there.
