A WOMAN is to complete a 26 mile walk in Yorkshire to honour the memory of her uncle.

Bev Eastwood, 42, is to tackle The Three Peaks challenge in memory of her uncle Jack Scarborough, who lived in Storth and passed away earlier this year at the age of 79.

Ms Eastwood, from Darwen, and her boyfriend Simon Tattersall, 40, who knew Mr Scarborough from the village where he grew up in, are seeking to raise £1,000 for Prostate Cancer UK.

Mr Scarborough was a well-known and liked character in the village and was particularly renowned for his craftsmanship and joinery skills across the local area.

“Uncle Jack was a very jolly and cheery character”, said Bev, who works as a marketing manager for the Gazette's parent company Newsquest.

“When he was going through extensive treatment you would have never known, because he was so upbeat and never let anything get him down.”

The Three Peaks takes in the peaks of Pen-Y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough, ascending and descending more than 5,000 feet.

The couple expect to complete the walk in 11 hours.

This is a challenge for even an experienced walker but they both saw it as a fitting tribute to Mr Scarborough, who used to consider walking over Sharp Edge as an ‘afternoon stroll’.

Bev said: “He was a big walker. He enjoyed walking in the Lake District so much until a few years ago he wasn’t able to do it anymore. It will be nice to do something like this in his memory. He was a fantastic person.”

Also keen walkers themselves, both Bev and Simon have completed the Yorkshire Three Peaks in the past, this being the second time for her and third time for him.

Bev said: “At the end of the day this was my idea to do this for charity and in memory of Uncle Jack. I think he would be very proud.”

The challenge takes place on Saturday (September 3).
