WATERWAYS enthusiasts have replaced the replica number plate stolen in August from a bridge on the Lancaster Canal.

The disappearance of the 180 wooden plate at Larkrigg Hall, Natland, prompted "at least four public-spirited people to respond", said Frank Sanderson, of the Friends of Lancaster Canal.

Peter Livesley, of Morecambe, obtained and carved a piece of mahogany, and Keith Tassart, formerly of British Waterways, painted it, and fitted it to the bridge at the weekend.

As reported by the Gazette, canal buff Colin Ogden, of Burnley, suspected that the plaque was dislodged by thieves of souvenir hunters, or by somebody with a grudge against him for his forthright views on restoring the canal's Northern Reaches.

Colin was unable to be present when the new plaque was fitted, but his wife Linda said: "What a nice thing to do, that people can be so kind and help us promote the Lancaster Canal."
