CUB scouts descended on the Lake District to celebrate two milestones.

Youngsters from across the country enjoyed an action-packed weekend at Great Tower Activity Centre, Newby Bridge, which this year turns 80-years-old.

The visit comes in the cub scouts' centenary year - which has seen a host of events and activities for outdoor-loving children.

Great Tower activity centre has hosted weekends for the Cubs with the final one taking place last weekend.

As part of the Cubs100 programme, Great Tower Activity Centre put together an adventure package to help them celebrate.

Cubs got to take part in kayaking on Windermere, rock climbing, high ropes and mountain climbing. The Scout Association wants to give the young people a chance to take part in activities they wouldn’t normally get the chance to.

The aim of the weekend was to let Cubs have real adventures and fulfil the Scout Association recommendation that at least 50 percent of their Scouting activities should be held outside their Scout hut.

In the heart of the Lake District National Park, close to the shore of Windermere – Great Tower is an ideal base for adventure.

Set in 250 acres it boasts woodland to explore as well as rocky crags to climb. The Cubs loved the space around them and the chance to take up on the activities offered.

Sally Yarwood, from 8th Flixton in Manchester, said: “This is such a fantastic weekend for our Cubs, it’s given them a chance to get away and take part in lots of activities they wouldn’t get chance to do on other camps.

"It’s also got them to join in with Cub pack from other parts of the country – and is great for letting them know they’re part of something bigger. We’ve done lots of activities to celebrate Cubs100 and it’s really important as they take away friendships and real achievements.”

Chief Scout Bear Grylls said: "I’m so proud to show so many people that Scouting is all about fun, friendship and young people having an adventurous timer supported by caring proactive leaders.

"This is also a fantastic way to celebrate the 100th birthday of the Cub Scouts in style! I really want to thank all the inspiring volunteers and people involved in making Cubs100 happen. Let’s make the next 100 years even more life-enhancing for many millions of young people."
