Kendal Town's new Under 21 Development Team suffered a 4-0 home defeat to a strong Morecambe Reserve side in a friendly game at the Pye Motors Stadium on Wednesday night.

It proved to be a tough night for the Under 21s who put plenty of effort in, while they would have also gained some valuable match practice and experience against a Morecambe side that had a combination of reserve and academy players within their line up.

Morecambe made the better start, and looked comfortable in possession, while Steve Yawson's pace caused early problems for the Kendal back line.

Kendal's best opportunity came after 18 minutes after a free kick into the box was fired wide of the right hand post by Kyle Gudgeon.

The visitors opened the scoring in the 28th minute when referee Bernard Law awarded a penalty after Yawson was felled in the box by one of the Kendal players.

Sam Joel stepped up to drill the penalty into the bottom right hand corner of the net as Morecambe made the breakthrough.

The visitors could have scored more goals after chances by Yawson and Dan Gray went over the bar, while Kendal's Ben Collinson side footed the ball wide of the left hand post as the half time whistle blew.

Kendal made a positive start to the second half as they began to pass the ball around, but without fashioning an opportunity on the Morecambe goal.

Morecambe made it 2-0 10 minutes after the restart when Reece Deaken prodded the ball home from close range.

Jo Fiddler in the Kendal goal made a spectacular save to deny Yawson as he parried the ball over for a corner, before the talented shot stopper cleared the ball away from a cross.

Morecambe made it 3-0 when Yawson controlled the ball in the box before his well-timed finish found the back of the net.

Kendal despite the deficit kept going as second half substitute Declan Bowman saw his effort on goal go wide of the post after making a driving run into the penalty area.

The Shrimps completed the scoring with just five minutes left on the clock after Joel drilled the ball home for his second after latching onto a clinical through ball.

In the end it was all about giving the younger players some game time and experience with the club planning further matches as the season progresses.
