The Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) was called to the A66 near Whinfell Forest to a crash involving multiple vehicles and left one man with life-threatening injuries.
The call-out occurred at around 11am this morning.
GNAAS airlifted a man, who was a driver of one of the vehicles.
The 75-year-old who suffered multiple life-threatening injuries was treated by the GNAAS doctor-led trauma team.
He was flown to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough within 20 minutes where he arrived in a critical condition.
