ULVERSTON will be marking Halloween on Monday with a twinkling display of hundreds of scented candles and a few new sensory delights.

The team of volunteers behind the annual Candlelit Walk will once again be lighting the paths of Ford Park with candles, flaming torches and shadowy shapes and this year it is planned to have lots of fog.

"We got a fabulous one-off grant from Cumbria County Council for kit," explained lead volunteer Jennie Dennett. "This meant Team Candle could enjoy some retail trips and clicks. We got some more safety kit but also a really big fog machine with lashings of fog juice so we've added spookiness as the glows mingle with the wisps."

Ulverston's resident circus Queen Jennifer Street, of Matrix Circus, also has some new tricks to share after a spell of intense circus training in Newcastle. As well as playing with fire, she will be bringing stilt-walking monsters to the event.

New this year is Chris Dennett's Door of Perception. He has been using creative coding to create a digital mirror where people will be able to dance with their ghostly reflections and discover superpowers with lights.

Amy Boud, of Don't Tell Suzy, will be bringing songs of mystery and moths. In the Kitchen Garden, there will be The Last Wolf shadow show with Naomi Edwards and Hannah Fox and rural craftsman Tom Philipson is installing a garden of glowing, carved marrows.

There will be a B Movie feel to the shadow screens and displays that have been created by community groups.

"Expect shadowy monsters, possibly quite silly ones," said Mrs Dennett. "We've also got more candles thanks to another donation of scrap wax from Wax Lyrical which makes this occasion possible.

"You have to be hewn of solid optimism to run a weather-dependent event in October but we'll be playing-out come what may because it's important to mark Halloween and what better way to embrace the coming of the dark winter than by lighting-up a wood with magical, flickering candle light.

"People are invited to bring a monstery pumpkin to show off in the Pumpkin Patch. Monstrous fancy dress is optional but it is advised that capes and flammable costumes are not worn.

The event is free with a donations bucket and the Coach House Cafe is also open. The path will be lit from 6pm to 8.30pm, more details at facebook.com/candlelitwalk
