AS THE first anniversary of Storm Desmond approaches, two Kendal charities are reaching out to flood-hit residents who are still struggling to get back on their feet.

Free specialist support - from counselling to aromatherapy massage - is being offered by CancerCare and Age UK South Lakeland to help anyone who is still dealing with the emotional distress of being flooded last December.

Thanks to a £15,000 grant from Cumbria Community Foundation, the service is to offer a lifeline to adults and children until the end of June 2017.

"Last year’s terrible flooding had a massive impact on people’s lives," said Kim Keith, administrator of CancerCare's Lakes Centre on Blackhall Road, Kendal.

"While many had good support from family and friends to help them recover, others have struggled and are still finding it extremely tough.

"Flooding can challenge even the hardiest of people and we’ve already seen a number of clients struggling with additional issues such as a cancer diagnosis or bereavement. People really have been tested to their limits."

Flood-hit residents will have the chance to talk to a qualified counsellor for up to six free sessions, or take a course of complementary therapy, such as relaxing massage, at the Lakes Centre, with free transport available.

June Page, of Kendal, recently benefited from the service and said: "I had the pleasure of having six sessions of Indian head massage after my home was flooded last December. Since then I’ve had to move twice, so when I heard what CancerCare was offering I jumped at the chance. It was just what I needed - something relaxing after such a stressful time."

Kim Keith, of CancerCare, told the Gazette: "As the first anniversary approaches, people will already be experiencing a variety of emotions: some people will be excited to be back in their homes, others might find it quite frightening, and many are still anxiously waiting to go home. If you need someone to talk to, or just like the thought of having a nice massage to take your mind off things, then do get in touch. We’re here to help."

Alison Dixey, head of client services at CancerCare, added: "This is a great example of collaboration between two local charities who have worked together to support the flood relief efforts since last year. Research also suggests that many people only recognise they need some help months and sometimes a year or more after the event, so we are delighted to provide support at this important time and help bring long-term benefits to those affected."
