A DEVOTED annual Appleby fair visitor has admitted being involved in a plot to commit violence.

Alan Reynolds Cheyanne Tunney, 33, appeared via a prison video link at Carlisle Crown Court today.

Tunney pleaded guilty to a charge of conspiring with others to commit a violent disorder.

The details of the offence state that, between June 1 and 8, he conspired together with other persons to use or threaten unlawful violence which would cause a person of reasonable firmness present at the scene to fear for his personal safety.

No details of the offence were outlined during a 25-minute hearing in front of Judge Peter Davies. Wearing a white T-shirt and black jacket, Tunney could be seen in the video booth listening intently to proceedings.

The precise basis to which he had entered his guilty plea was explained by his defence counsel, Andrew Stranex.

"He did conspire as alleged, but in relation to Appleby Fair specifically that is not his chosen venue," said Mr Stranex.

The court heard Tunney had been captured on video footage gathered by the Crown Prosecution Service.

But his lawyer stated: "He had no interest in engaging with anyone on that day and at that location (Appleby). He has attended Appleby Fair since his birth, it is an annual, absolutely crucial part of his life. It is not a venue at which he would seek to cause trouble."

Judge Davies adjourned the hearing until next Monday, when Tunney is due to be sentenced for the offence.

Ahead of that day, police are expected to draw up a "community impact statement" to focus on the effect of any potential disorder, which will be considered by the court.

Prosecutor Beccy McGregor added that a criminal behaviour order would also be sought. "That will deal with the relevant provisions and the police concerns that this defendant shouldn't be allowed to attend Appleby fair for the foreseeable future," she said.

In the meantime Tunney, of Stockbridge Lane, Bentley, Doncaster, was remanded in custody.

Tens of thousands of people flock to Appleby every year for the traditional horse fair.
