CONGRATULATIONS must go to David Jackson for his stunning picture of dawn breaking behind Kendal’s war memorial (Gazette, November 17.)
The lovely trees silhouetted behind the memorial maintain a link with Nature’s progress as they change gradually with each new season.
These trees also provide shelter for dozens of roosting pied wagtails from the rigours of winter in the countryside.
At dusk the wagtails fly in from all directions throughout the winter months and, after much roof hopping and chattering, they settle for the night close together in the two trees sheltered by the surrounding buildings.
At dawn, when the picture was taken, the birds would have been stirring and preparing to return for the day to their rural feeding grounds.
It is surely a privilege to share our market place with these tiny creatures and they provide a memorable spectacle which can be enjoyed by all.
