A GREAT-grandmother of seven celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded by family at a Kendal care home.

Emma Hamer was born on November 22 1916 at Worsley, Manchester.

She is the daughter of Welsh parents from Wrexham and was the ninth of ten children.

She married John Clifford Benyon in July 1937. They had two children - Ann in 1943 and Clive in 1946.

They owned chip shops and green-groceries and she carried on working in these shops after her husband died in 1951 - leaving her to raise two small children.

She married again to Ernest Hamer in 1995. He died in 1972 and Mrs Hamer retired to live in Cleveleys in 1973 where she stayed until moving to live with her daughter in Kendal in 2003.

She is now a resident at the Stonecross Care Home.

Her hobbies included walking, gardening, dress-making, knitting and cooking.
