A LAKE District town is going to celebrate a German Christmas as a themed outdoor market will be held in Windermere next week.

Called the Windermere Ja, the market will be featuring over 40 stalls, one of which will be held by Paula from The Lingmoor Guesthouse.

The guesthouse stall will be selling the hand-painted teapots used at the guesthouse, handmade-fused glass Christmas decorations, along with a variety of other Christmas gifts.

Paula and Graham Smith, originally from Walshaw, moved from Bury to the Lake District in 2009 to run the guesthouse after they found the business through the TV Show A Place in the sun.

Mr Smith said: “In 2011 we along with other local businesses attended a meeting held by Councillor Ben Berry regarding having a Christmas Market here in Windermere. 5 years on this is now going to happen. Ben has worked tirelessly to get this off the ground.

“We are very excited as December can be a quieter month for Windermere and The Lake District and while we don’t want to dwell on the past people may remember we had terrible floods in November 2009 and again last year at the beginning of December, resulting in a drop in visitors to the Lakes and devastating effects for local people and businesses.”

“Having an Outdoor Christmas Market here will hopefully bring lots of visitors and locals alike and put Windermere on the map as the place to come for local food and drink, Christmas gifts and all involved are hoping this will be an annual yearly event going forward.”

The market is organised by a team including Windermere Tourist Information, Councillor Ben Berry, Made in Cumbria and Mountain Goat Tours.

The Windermere Ja will be held on December 10 and December 11.
