ART lovers can take a creative stroll into remote regions and out of the way places with artist Ray Green in his latest solo show.

Running at the Brewhouse in Kendal, A Walk in the Wild is a journey into wild, savage and beautiful places strikingly captured by Ray's bold brushstrokes and inspired by his experiences.

"On adventures in the Lake District, Scotland, France, Slovenia, I seek the hidden authentic faces of their unique wildness," explains Ray, a member of the acclaimed Green Door arts group.

"I work at the heart of these wild-places, walking or canoeing in with my art materials in all seasons, risking hypothermia for my art. These paintings attempt to share these hidden and beautiful places; without the heat, cold and wet, the dangers - and midges."

Ray says he was first drawn to wild places years ago, and escaped from "down south" by moving to Kendal: "Over the years I was lucky to build up the skills to be able to journey into and live in the wild places. First as a mountain leader with Cumbria Scout Association, then with Kendal Mountain Rescue Team, and then a canoeist with good friends.

"At first this was because I simply enjoyed the challenge, adventure and risk. But as a result of these journeys I discovered that on or near deep rivers or old mountains, there is a wild-stillness, energy and savage beauty which I need to paint."

Many of Ray's sorties are by canoe, penetrating remote parts of Scotland by linking lochs, often what he describes as "portaging," carrying and dragging canoes over land: "We then wild-camp under a tarp with a fire and a good red wine.

"I’ve canoed many of the big French rivers, the Tarn, Lot, Allier, and Dordogne, journeying for seven or eight days, wild camping and on official camp sites, sketching along the way. As well as painting the wild places I also write stories of my adventures and tell them regularly at the Stealing Thunder Story Nights at Brigsteer Village Hall on the second Thursday of each month."

A Walk in the Wild runs until January 27 at the Brewhouse at Burgundy's on Lowther Street, Kendal.
