THE third annual “Canal Brolly Parade” organised by Ulverston Canal Regeneration Group was a magical occasio.

Fifty children and their families carried an array of twinkling, sparkling umbrellas which formed trails of light along the towpath.

This year had a special twist as the occasion was also the official opening of the newly-installed sculptural “totems” designed by Chris Brammall.

The ribbon cutting was performed by Cllr Paul Smith, Deputy Mayor, who explained to the crowd how each totem represented a different aspect of the canal’s history; the inauguration, ship building, the railway bridge, iron and steel industry and the import, export trade through the lock gates.

The parade paused at each one to hear a brief explanation of the historical significance.

On reaching the foot of the canal, there were refreshments available to renew everyone’s energy for singing Christmas songs played by Ulverston Town Band.

"The event was a great way to celebrate the groups’ community activities for the year and people went home full of seasonal good cheer," said Colin Smith, chairman of the Ulverston Canal Regeneration Group.
