A VINTAGE vehicle event was hailed as the ‘best ever’ by organisers, as dozens of classics arrived from across the country for a Drive and Ride in South Lakeland.

Over 80 different classic and vintage cars including vintage vans, Rolls Royce’s and Ford Granadas took part in the ‘Drive and Ride In Day’, held at the Lakeland Motor Museum in Backbarrow.

Proud owners of classic and vintage vehicles arrived from in and out of the county, including west Cumbria, Macclesfield and Southport, to display their pride and joy just outside the museum for other visitors to admire.

The day was hailed as a success, as only seven vehicles took part when the event was held the last time in the aftermath of the last year’s December floods.

Les Micklethwaite, one of the organisers of the Classic Drive and Ride, said: “Everything was in our favour, the weather was fine. If there is salt on the road the classic and vintage cars don’t get taken out if the weather is bad but it was a beautiful day.”

This was the third time museum held a ‘Drive and Ride In Day’ over the festive season, following a surge in interest from classic car owners wanting to make the most of their time off between Christmas and New Year.

Even though visiting the motor museum was not a compulsory part of the day, over 300 people went to see their newest additions, including a rare 100 Jaguar SS and a futuristic electric superbike.

Mr Micklethwaite said: “There are so many people to thank that I cannot thank them all individually but I would like to thank everyone for the large turnout.”

Following a large audience interest, the organisers are seeking to hold the next event as early as April with dates to be announced.
