A SOUTH Lakeland man has completed a mammoth running challenge in memory of his late father.

Last December, Paul Johnson's dad Bob passed away following a battle with cancer. To remember him, he has spent every day of 2016 running 10 kilometres to raise money for the nurses who supported him in his final days.

Come rain or shine, and in the face of illness and commitments, Mr Johnson, of Windermere Road, Kendal, has laced up his running shoes every 24 hours to raise funds for St Mary's Hospice,Ulverston.

For his final run on New Year's Eve, he finished his challenge at Cartmel Priory, a place endeared to the entire family.

"My dad was keen on running himself and it was a challenge I set myself with a view to raising money for St Mary's Hospice who helped look after him in his last days," said the travel blogger.

"Sometimes it's become almost routine but other times, certainly when I've not been feeling well or been busy, it's been particularly challenging.

"It is an achievement I have been delighted to complete. It's obviously been very challenging and to complete it has been very satisfying."

Mr Johnson's mother, Judy, added: "He might not have won the BBC sports personality of the year but to my mind he is the biggest sporting winner and hero of that our family could have produced so far.

"His dad would have been so proud of what he has done especially as running was his sport.

"Paul has been determined to raise money in memory of Bob who benefited from St Mary's Hospice in Ulverston whose Hospice at Home service allows terminally ill patients to die at home without pain but with dignity surrounded by their family and friends."
