The North West is set to experience bitterly cold temperatures with the risk of ice and snow showers tonight.

But South Lakeland is looking likely to escape any heavy snowfalls - although a light flurry began in Kendal around 3.30pm.

The Met Office says that there will be further sleet and snow showers in the North West tonight, with possibly a spell of more widespread rain, sleet and snow moving southwards after midnight, with gales in places.

There will be icy conditions for many with a widespread and sharp frost. The minimum temperature will be -4°C.

Tomorrow (Friday) early rain and snow will quickly clear south to leave long sunny spells with only isolated wintry showers. It will be windy at first, with coastal gales. It will feel bitterly cold with a maximum temperature of 4°C.

More locally Kendal and Windermere are enjoying sunny spells today although there could be light snow showers later this afternoon.

The Penrith area might get a heavier snowfall later this afternoon.

But Friday in South Lakeland and Eden looks set to be sunny.
