EVERY third Friday of the month, diners at Carnforth railway station's Refreshment Room are entertained by the High Society Jazz Band.

The popular jazz lunch sessions get into full swing for 2017 on Friday, January 20, from 12.30pm to 2.30pm, in the period-style surroundings of the platform cafe.

The Refreshment Room is restored to its 1940s-style glory, complete with decorative hot water urn, and will be familiar to film buffs as the inspiration for the Milford Junction tearoom in David Lean's classic Brief Encounter.

The musicians of High Society Jazz Band hail from Cumbria and north Lancashire, and they set out to give their audiences an insight into jazz's many different aspects, from classic New Orleans style to the swing era, with songs from great American and British songwriters along the way, all played with originality and fun.

The band is built around a four-piece rhythm section, with a two-piece front line, and is now in its ninth year.

Bare Village Club in Morecambe is the venue for High Society's other regular monthly performances, on the third Sunday of each month from 4pm to 6.30pm.

The band say this session has become increasingly popular with other musicians who come along to sit in with the band for a number or two.

Current regular members of High Society are Peter Boswell, cornet and trombone; Bruce Carnaffin, clarinet and vocals; Neil Anderton, keyboard and vocals; David Bateman, banjo, guitar and vocals; Gerry Clayton, double bass; and Robin Andrews, drums, washboard and vocals.

Carnforth's Refreshment Room is open daily with a full menu table service from 9am to 4pm. www.refreshmentroom.com
