STAR saxophone player and 2016 BBC Young Musician of the Year finalist Jess Gillam, is leading a a Woodwind Day Masterclass at Casterton Sedbergh Preparatory School on Tuesday, January 24, with budding young musicians from schools across the north of England.

Jess, now in her first year of undergraduate studies at the Royal Northern College of Music, is a brilliant young instrumentalist and performer with an outstanding stage presence.

Budding clarinet and saxophone players will spend the morning in a masterclass with Jess guiding them through pieces of music they have been preparing in advance.

In the afternoon at 2pm all are welcome to attend a concert at Holy Trinity Church, Casterton, featuring Jess, showcasing some of the pupils participating in the masterclass event.

Admission is free.

Director of music at Casterton, Sedbergh Preparatory School, Anastasia Micklethwaite, explained that the aim of the day was to inspire young musicians, not just woodwind players, in their music. She added: "It's important for pupils in Cumbria and South Lakes to have these opportunities. As well as providing outreach visits to many schools across the region, I look externally for the best opportunities available. This enables musicians to get a different perspective, to hear different players and to see and learn about different techniques and performance styles. It is a crucial element of learning to be a musician."
