ONE of Cumbria's leading printmakers is on the exhibition trail.

Kendal-based creator Jamie Barnes has a new show of his recent work running at Ulverston's popular art café Natterjack’s until March 10.

Jamie, who is also a sought after freelance curator, has been a keen printmaker for almost a decade: “I had always been keen on drawing, but never quite found my style," he explained.

"However, I attended a printmaking course at Carlisle Art College back in 2008 where I learned all about making prints by etching on metal using special chemicals. It's a magical and addictive process and I have never looked back since."

The Ulverston exhibition features a new series of etchings Jamie's made over the last year which include atmospheric views of the Furness Peninsula, including Rampside and Barrow Docks.

He's well known for creating images about buildings, architecture and structures within the landscape, choosing to highlight architectural details in the urban environment and celebrating manmade interruptions in the rural environment. All Jamie’s work starts with a real place which he alters, abstracts or exaggerates through a drawing. This drawing becomes his reference image. In his prints he etches strong, controlled lines then and adds texture and tone.

“My interest in buildings comes from my parents really, " continues Jamie. "When I was growing up in Kendal my Dad worked as a draughtsman and a building inspector and my Mum worked at an estate agent, so houses were often a topic of conversation.

"I am really pleased to be able to show these etchings at Natterjacks which is a special place and in a very special town, especially for printmakers.”

Meanwhile, the talented Mr Barnes is back in Kendal town centre at the South Lakeland District Council Pop Up Shop again until Saturday, February 18, selling prints, cards, models and a new line in etched jewellery.

The shop is at 38 Finkle Street, opposite Beales.

Natterjacks is located at 34 Queen Street, Ulverston.

Open Monday-Friday, 3pm-10pm.
