CHILDREN from St Cuthbert's Catholic Primary School in Windermere have created a community memory quilt following a visit they made to a Lake District Holocaust Project (LDHP) exhibition.

Memory quilts were on show there and the children were very excited to see that they told stories from many countries, some of which were familiar to them. Pupils have been studying the Holocaust and the lessons to be learned from it.

The majority of the children's families have moved to Windermere from a wide range of countries including Poland, Latvia, Romania and Kenya.

The visit to the exhibition sparked lively discussions among the pupils about memories of home. These discussions helped the children create their own individual artworks for their memory quilt panels which show the network of strong family ties the youngsters have across the world. It also incorporates different flags.

The children have worked with community artist Nicki Smith who helped produce quilts as part of the LDHP's Holocaust and Memory Reframed project which was also supported by Arts Council England Northwest.

The LDHP has run primary school workshops across South Lakeland which encourage tolerance and understanding inspired by local stories of kindness shown to the 300 child Holocaust survivors when they arrived in Calgarth, Windermere, in 1945.

One of these 'Windermere Boys' has inspired the school to get involved in a new project - the Alfred Huberman Writing Award. The LDHP has invited the children at the Windermere school to take part.
