SWIMMERS in Hornby will see their pool close on March 31 - but the future looks more hopeful for swimming pools in Carnforth and Heysham.

Lancaster City Council says its own "perilous financial position" means it cannot afford to keep running the three community pools at a cost of £176,700 each year.

It had been hoped that Hornby's Focus School would take over the running of the 15-metre-long village pool. But its small size and lack of other leisure facilities led to the school withdrawing its offer. The council said it was closing the pool "with heavy heart".

In Carnforth and Heysham, it is hoped local schools will take on the pools. Lancaster City Council is to fund them until the end of September to give time for business cases to be prepared.

Hornby's pool building, at Melling Road, is to be handed back to Lancashire County Council, which will decide its future.
