KENDAL Buddhists are to celebrate their faith's new year on Wednesday, May 10.
The short ceremony, or puja, is to take place at the United Reformed Church's lower hall, in the courtyard just off Highgate, Kendal, from 7pm to 9pm.
Vesak, celebrated on the full moon day in the month of May, is described as the most important festival in the Buddhist calendar. It is called the ‘thrice-blessed event’ because it recalls the birth, enlightenment and passing away of Prince Siddhartha, the founder of Buddhism.
Decorative lanterns and the cooking and sharing of milk rice, or kiribath, are traditional features of the celebrations. Food will be shared after the ceremony, and donations of vegetarian dishes, soft drinks, flowers, white candles and incense would be welcome, said Jacquetta Gomes, secretary of the Buddhist Group of Kendal (Theravada).
