A DAY event showcasing opportunities for older adults will be held at Ulverston Library this Friday.

Ulverston Library will be celebrating later life with an event aimed at those enjoying later life or planning for their retirement.

This one-day Fair on 17 March 2017 will be a showcase of opportunities to help people find out how to get the most out of later life.

There will be lots of ideas for healthy living, information on local organisations offering social support, companionship and practical advice on meeting the physical and mental challenges of later life and retirement.

Councillor Ian Stewart, Cabinet Member for Public Services, said: “Libraries play a vital role in local communities and provide a much needed resource for people enjoying their later years – it’s not just about the books, there are also opportunities to study new subjects, expand your skills and meet other people with similar interests.

"This Living Well Fair at Ulverston Library will provide all sorts of information from a range of local organisations, all designed to help you make the most out of your retirement and later years and I look forward to a fantastic event.”

MORE TOP STORIES:

A number of local organisations including Ulverston Mind, Live Action Dementia, Furness Carers, Ulverston Leisure Centre and Age UK along with local health practitioners will be on hand to answer questions about getting the most out of your later years and the support available.

Cumbria Libraries have a great range of resources and activities to offer older adults with their ‘Reading Well’ collections, including books ‘on prescription’ - offering advice on general wellbeing from eating and exercise to encouraging relaxation and contentment.

There will also be information about joining local groups or taking part in leisure activities and learning opportunities.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to learn about new resources such as online access to e-books and e-audio books.

Above all the day will be an informal, friendly gathering of older people to inspire them to take up new activities promoting an active later life, which in turn combats loneliness and depression and supports independent living.

Refreshments, including tea and coffee, will be available.

Informal 5 - 10 minute talks will take place throughout the day, given by the various organisations about their activities.

Much of the morning schedule will be repeated in the afternoon.

Partners taking part include Ulverston Mind, Age UK, Ulverston Integrated Care Community, Greenwich Leisure, U3A, Ulverston Library and Borrowbox (provider of Cumbria libraries’ online e-books and e-audiobooks).

Living Well in Later Life Fair will be held all day on March 17 at Ulverston Library.
