Nicki Stamp (Letters, March 10, 'What are these blobs?') provides a clear picture of some mysterious 'blobs'. In fact there was a query in your pages a year or two ago about a similar phenomenon.
They are almost certainly an example of fascinating slime moulds - single-cell organisms which, as part of their life-cycle, form such temporary clusters. Google, of course, provides a wealth of information on them.
