ACTIVE Cumbrian women are keen to bring a national movement aimed at getting others moving to the county.

A proposal for a project officer and start up resources for ThisCumbrianGirlCan is in Sellafield’s Community Choices funding process which comes to a close this Sunday (March 26).

The aim of the initiative is to inspire, support and encourage women and girls to become more active across Cumbria.

Bid instigator, Katie Harper, said that the funding could be a 'game changer' for women in Cumbria.

"I have been involved in women’s and girls’ rugby in Cumbria for 15 years, the #ThisGirlCan campaign is a great tool to help us all encourage women to be more active, and this funding could be a game changer for us in Cumbria," she said.

Since launching the initiative on Facebook and Twitter a wide range of sports and activity providers have welcomed the idea and registered their interest in getting involved including: netball, football, boxing, karate, cheerleading, sports centres, running, cycling, golf and equestrian centres.

Sarah Jones, the woman behind the Mum's CORE Fitness and Kendal HIIT Club is one of those backing the initiative.

"We want to help inspire women to get involved in exercise and sporting activities," she said. "For us it's about safe exercise education post baby, getting new mums together and showing them how easy it is to do a little exercise with your baby.

"This is an amazing campaign giving girls and women support, motivation and encouragement to get involved in all kinds of sporting activities. We aim to do what we can to encourage people to vote for ThisCumbrianGirlCan."

If funding was secured then it could be used to help set up ‘sport buddies’ and ThisCumbrianGirlCan Ambassadors, a project officer, events and promotion to get it kick started.

"What’s exciting about this idea, is that rather than each activity provider trying to promote their offer independently, this project will help us work constructively together in a new way, and to develop a positive community and culture around women’s and girls’ physical activity," Ms Jones said. "We will celebrate successes and encourage people to try a range activities to find those that suit them."

To secure the funding, votes are needed and can be made through the Community Choices website by midnight on 26th March.
